Welcome, fellow stationery geeks!

I shall be using this blog to witter on about my stationery finds in general and diaries/planners and Filofaxes in particular. Please feel free to witter along with me!

Filofax spotted in the wild!

Hello all!

I've been recording the new series called 'Elementary' with Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller.  They've been stacking up in my Sky+ planner for a while now and I managed to watch the first episode the other week.  I love it!  It's really clever and Jonny Lee Miller's character is very quirky.  If you get the chance, give it a watch.  It's on in the UK on a Tuesday night on Sky Living at 9pm.

Anyway, I digress.  In the first episode aired in the UK on Tuesday 23 October, what did I spot???  Yes you've guessed it, A FILOFAX!  Lucy Liu (Watson) had just met Jonny Lee Miller (Holmes) and she dropped her bag.  Out tumbled a Filofax!  Now I'm not sure what type it was, but I thought it looked a bit like a brown Finsbury (is there such a thing?), although I'm not sure it was because I think the clasp looks a bit... wrong.

Lucy Liu (Watson) dropping her bag to reveal a Filofax in Sky Living's 'Elementary'.

And here's a link to the Youtube clip I took the screen shot from at 1.54 minutes in.

What do you think???  Answers on a postcard please!

Perfect punching for A5s

Well hello there gang!

On Saturday night, my hubby went on a VERY rare night out with some friends.  The next thing I knew, he was falling down the stairs at 2am.  After that, I couldn't get to sleep until after 4am so naturally, on Sunday, I was like a zombie and really didn't fancy doing anything too taxing.  So I decided to have a go at setting up my A5 raspberry Chameleon Filofax.  Well, punching some paper for it anyway.  The 'setting-up' part will come later when I've woken up again...

My A5 raspberry Chameleon

I've had my A5 since about July this year but the school holidays involved lots of entertaining my six year old daughter and once she was back at school, I increased my working days by an extra day.  So all in all, I just haven't had the time (or the inclination really) to get it sorted.  I obviously didn't need an A5 Filofax very much did I!!!  Oh well.  It would be rude not to complete my collection - I have at least one of each size available now!  Which is extremely important as I know with absolute certainty that all you Filofax fans will understand completely.

Anyway, some of you may remember Ray's post here about lined paper that was a good alternative to Filofax paper because it's so much cheaper.  I've been after some for a while now but every time I went to get some, the shelf was empty (another reason I've only just got round to giving my A5 some attention!).  So last week, I popped in to Staples and they actually had some!  I bought two packs of two Eco-Friendly Writing pads (with perforated pages) from Staples at £2 per pack (I would put a link here but it doesn't seem to be available on their website for some strange reason).  So that's 160 pages for £2.  Compare that to Filofax lined A5 paper which is £2.75 for just 25 sheets!!!  Wow - what a saving these Staples pads are!

£2 for 160 sheets from Staples - bargain!

Anyway, I've had a bit of experience with punching these pads before.  My hubby uses an A5 Filofax for work and he made his own very fancy day-per-page time management diary pages (that's another post for me to do...) and he used my punch to punch them, as well as these pads which I bought him on Ray's recommendation.

I use a Rapesco Adjustable Diary Punch 66-P which you can currently buy from Amazon for £10.48.  You can use this punch for mini, pocket and personal sized paper, but as many of you will know, with a bit of 'jiggery-pokery', you can also use it for A5 pages too.

Here comes the jiggery-pokery!

Basically, you pull the punch holes apart as if you were going to use it to punch personal pages.  You hold the paper in your left hand with the margin down the right.  Put the punch at the top and punch the first three holes with the bottom of the punch.  Then move the punch down to the bottom and punch the other three holes using the top of the punch.  Easy right?  Yeah...

It's not difficult to do, but you do need to make sure you're punching the holes in the right place, otherwise they won't fit on your rings properly and that will make you swear very loudly.  Not that I would do that because I'm a lady.  Yes that's right, a lady.

Now I may be preaching to the converted here, but in case you're new to punching A5 Filofax paper, this is what I did...

I took a piece of dark Filofax paper (green in this case) and put it on top of 7 pages of my Staples lined paper (the Rapesco punch can punch no more than 8 pages at a time).  Then I took the plastic bottom off the punch and put the cellophane I took from the pads on the floor to catch all the holes.  When I punched the holes (as described above), I used the hole punch upside down so I could see exactly where I needed to punch the holes.

Green sheet on the top, 7 white ones underneath.

A clearer shot for your inspection!

Here you can see exactly how it works.  You know where to punch because all you should be able to see through the holes of the hole punch is white, instead of green.

So because I used the dark paper as a guide over the top of the white paper, all my holes were punched in exactly the correct place, quickly and easily.

I really need to do a video but hell will freeze over before I do something as horrifying as that!!!  Maybe I could do a demonstration at the Philofaxy North-West meet-up on 1st December???  Let me know if this idea appeals and if so, I'll bring what I need along with me.  It's not rocket science but sometimes a little demonstration can make all the difference!

While at Staples, I also bought a pack of A5 Multiuse 80gm paper (£4 for 500 sheets) for my printer.

A5 printer paper from Staples, £4 for 500 sheets.  Bargain!

My intention is that I'm going to make some of my own templates for my A5 at some point in the near future (I've got plenty of pocket and personal sized templates that I've done myself but nothing for A5).  But that's another post!  I wonder if it'll be 2014 before I get round to making them... ;-)

A spot of Filofaxing ready for 2013...

Hi guys!

Today I've been FILOFAXING.  I've been wanting to get my 2013 diary sorted out for quite a while now because I had almost a page of diary dates written down at the end of my 2012 diary, ready to transfer into it. But unfortunately, I seem to suffer from a condition called "Mountainoutofmolehillitis" whereby I always envisage a job taking about 14 times' the amount of time that it actually takes to complete, so I often end up putting it off for as long as possible because I can't be bothered won't have time to do it all in one go.

Anyway, today I bit the bullet and got cracking, and it took me about two-and-a-half hours to finish.  Phew!  So now my 2013 'week on one page with notes' diary and year planner are both complete and ready to go!

This is what I did...

Firstly, I gathered all my lists of dates together and wrote the following information on my year planner:

  • My daughter's school holidays (dark green, right side);
  • Dates I'm on call (red, left side);
  • Dates I'll be out at shows/gigs/band concerts/parties etc (purple);
  • Birthdays (light blue);
  • Important deadlines (red);
  • General perpetual reminders and reminders for my Secretarial duties (pink).

Then I transferred all this information into the diary itself (for the full year).  After that, I went through the diary week by week and wrote my reminders in. For example, when I have a birthday coming up, a week or two before I'll put a reminder on the 'notes' page to remind me that I need to buy a card and present if required. Or if I need to renew some insurance, I'll put a note in to remind me to start hunting around for quotes.

I like to have the year planner nice and full because as I use a slimline, I can't fit a full year's worth of diary pages into it in one go, so at least I'll have the year planner available so I can check for any clashes if I'm organising something well in advance.

I also use a few weeks' worth of 'day per page' diary pages as well, but I fill these out only when I actually put them in my Filofax.

So people - have you filled your 2013 diary yet? Which one are you using? And how do you use your year planner, if you use one at all?

I've been bargain spotting!

Hello all!

Just a quick post to let you know of some bargains I found today!

I got a text from my sister-in-law yesterday saying she'd bought herself a Filofax from TK Maxx for less than half price - a personal raspberry Finsbury.  Naturally, I directed her to Philofaxy and my blog so she could bamboozle herself with All Things Philofax!  (Did you see what I did there?  Eh?)

Anyway, finding out that such a Filofax was available at TK Max, this got me thinking.  Approaching Christmas time, they do tend to begin stocking Filofaxes (especially of the discontinued variety) so I thought I'd have a wander round and check out the situation, for research purposes only of course!!!

Well, what did I find???  A LOT!  Here's what they had:

  • Pocket Chameleons (black, brown, raspberry, aqua and SPRING GREEN!);
  • Compact (!!!) Chameleons (red and raspberry);
  • Personal Chameleons (black, brown and raspberry)
  • A5 Chameleons (brown, black, raspberry, red and SPRING GREEN!)
  • A5 Finchleys (red and mustard)
  • Pocket Adelphis (raspberry)
  • Slimline Adelphis (black and raspberry)
  • Personal Adelphis (raspberry)
  • A5 slimline Adelphis (black and red)
  • Pocket Butterfly (pewter)
  • Pocket Amazonas (black)
  • Pocket Cuban (black)
  • Mini Chameleons (raspberry, red, black, brown and SPRING GREEN!)
  • Mini Amazonas (almond, black and brown)

I would have bought a compact raspberry Chameleon and a slimline raspberry Adelphi, but I've already got these so I didn't actually buy anything.  I was gutted that the slimline Adelphi was only £25.  I paid an awful lot more than that for mine!!!  :-(

They were all no more than half price but many were less than half price, so pop along to TK Maxx and grab yourself a bargain!

My new Filofax DIY birthday ruler hack thingy wotsit...

Good morning/evening all!

Today I thought I'd tell you about a brainwave that I had last night. Instead of doing the ironing, I "FILOFAXED"!!! (Is that a naughty word? Am I in trouble? *sulks off slowly to the naughty step*)

A small wave of panic washed over me last night as I remembered that I have an awful lot of birthdays from September to December that I need to buy cards and presents for (29 to be exact!). Thus far, I've dealt with this by putting them all on my year planner. This helps me to keep my 'week on one page with notes' (planning ahead) diary up-to-date and serves as a perpetual calendar. I also use my year planner for important deadlines (ie: car tax, MOT, insurance fa la la), when I'm on call and for noting down when the school holidays are.

The problem is, I only use my year planner to help me fill in my 'week plus notes' diary and I forget to look at it at any other time! I write the birthdays in my main diary, but I only come across the reminder that I need to deal with a birthday about a week or two beforehand, which is fine really. But when I have so many birthdays to deal with, I also want to see a list of them at a glance (and that I'd look at regularly), so I can keep an eye out for a present or card well in advance and keep my eye on the bigger picture.

So the birthday ruler was born! And here it is:

Double-page spread showing my new birthday ruler

I use a black ruler/page marker for my 'day per page' diary.

Front of ruler with months January to July.

Reverse of ruler with months August to December, including a marker arrow to draw my attention to the next birthday on my list!

It's nothing fancy - I just typed up a list of all the birthdays/anniversaries I have on my year planner, split them roughly in half, decreased the font size, printed them off, cut them out and stuck them on my ruler with sellotape  It didn't take long at all!  I'm actually considering making another one for the clear ruler I use for my 'week plus notes' diary. This would have all my important deadlines on it.

I like to be able to see the big picture when it comes to everything I have to do. The months from September to December are soooo busy with deadlines, birthdays and Christmas that whilst I don't want to frighten myself, I need to remind myself that I must remain organised and get everything sorted that needs to be sorted. This birthday ruler helps me plan ahead a little more, rather than just fire-fighting as and when birthdays arise.

How do you deal with important (perpetual) reminders and birthdays? Do you use a year planner like me, or have you got another method that works really well for you? Do tell!

Thanks for reading!

I spy with my little eye, something beginning with...

F!

Well hello again everyone!

Yes I'm still alive!  Apologies for not posting for absolutely ages.  I've increased my working days to four a week instead of three, plus my hubby's been working such ridiculous hours recently that I've practically been a single working mother for the past month and a half!  If there was a 'Dislike' button, I would press it...

As well as the above, I car share to work now which means I don't get time to browse the shops for stationery finds in the morning.  I totally love my Filofax and its setup so I've nothing really to talk about there (although I do need to do a full set-up post at some point) and I am completely ADDICTED to reading.  My Kindle is my best friend in every way.  I got it in February and I've read 54 books on it since then!!!  Plus a good few 'normal' books from the library as well.  Holy cow!  It's no wonder I'm hardly ever posting on here any more...

My Kindle in a clear pencil case.  Keeps it protected and takes up no room in my bag whatsoever!

I've kept my eye on the blogging world recently but I've not read everything or commented at all for a while. But I finished another book last night and noticed a couple of posts on Philofaxy this morning that I felt I really must comment on, so that inspired me to come and have a chunter on my blog for a bit.

I did have a Filofax experience last week that got me a bit excited again I have to admit!  One of our HR field managers came to the office as he often does and when he visits, he sits opposite me.  We always have a laugh and a banter - he's quite a character!  Anyway, I needed to grab something from his desk so I wandered round and what did I see???  Yes you've guessed it - A FILOFAX!!!  I gasped and said, "You've got a Filofax!!!"  Well, as you can imagine, he wasn't allowed to leave the office until we had had a full discussion about said Filofax.  One thing that surprised me was that it was a mini.  It was a Classic in a kind-of toffee/caramel/camel colour.  It was stuffed to the gills like my first mini here, and all his entries were colour coded using highlighter pens!  He said he'd had it for years and he loved it because it fits in his pocket and he gets his inserts automatically delivered every year.  I briefly showed him my Filofax and my many tabs (those who went to the Manchester Meet-Up saw these - I'll do a set-up post soon) and we carried on chatting about how Filofaxes were generally brilliant.  I sooooo wanted to take pictures, but I think he would have thought I'd lost the plot if I'd asked, so I didn't...

It looked like this, but his was a bit darker.  Almost like a toffee colour!
Picture taken from the Filofax.kr website.

So, have you ever got excited when you've seen somebody you know using a Filofax???  Tell me what happened!

Philofaxy North-West Manchester Meet-up - what fun we had!

WARNING: PICTURE HEAVY POST!

Hello everyone!

Firstly, apologies for not posting on my blog for a while. It's been the school holidays so I've been attempting (and failing!) to entertain my six year old daughter. She goes back to school on Tuesday so hopefully normal service will resume shortly!

Anyway, yesterday was the day that I personally had been waiting for for a long time. The Philofaxy North-West Manchester meet-up!

A coaster given to us all by Anthony (Hill).  What a great idea!  Done by ASDA apparently.  Not everyone named on the coaster came along to the meet-up unfortunately, but never mind.

In order to attend such an event, preparations had to be made. I had to banish my daughter to fields afar so that I could escape and spend the whole day being completely selfish and indulgent. What fun! So, off she went with her Dad, who promptly dumped her with his parents while he went to play cricket!!!

Then came the travel arrangements. Naturally, I made a list of all the relevant train times on a scrap of paper and chucked it in my bag. JUST KIDDING! I wrote them in my Filofax of course. ;-)

Next, I don't know my way around Manchester so I printed off walking directions from Manchester Victoria station to our meeting place: the ground floor coffee shop at BHS on Market Street. It was actually really easy to find and I was GUTTED to realise that I'd arrived with about 20 minutes to spare, and TK Maxx was next door. How awful(!) So I thought I'd have a wander around the bag section first in case my other Philofaxy friends didn't want to later on. I didn't buy any bags (although I saw a couple that I liked), but I did get my friend a little birthday present. Reduced from £12.99 to £3.99, what a bargain!

It was now 11am, the scheduled beginning of the meet-up, so I popped next door and the first person I saw was Anthony sitting by the window - I recognised him from his Google id picture.

Anthony Hill (from Cheshire)

Then I spotted there was a massive 'Philofaxy' sign wrapped around the table! That kinda gave the game away...I wish I'd taken a picture of it actually but all rational thought flew out of the window once we all met! Sat with Anthony was Jenny (from Manchester) and Debi (from Widnes). Neither of them have blogs (although I suspect this might be about to change...) but are Philofaxy readers. After some quick introductions, Alison of Filo-Obsessed (from Preston) arrived so we all went to get a cuppa and sat down for a chat.

Well goodness me. Talk about the saying 'time flies when you're having fun' being appropriate! Within no time at all, it felt like I'd known the others in the group for most of my life. Everyone was totally lovely. We talked about all sorts - families, tv, hobbies, jobs...and I think a bit of chat about Filofaxes might have crept in there as well...tee hee hee! We admired, sniffed and stroked each other's Filofaxes (to the amusement of the other diners in the cafe) and there may have been a bit of enabling too...Jenny is now an Adelphi slimline convert and Debi's next Filofax is going to be a Holborn!

Then it was time for the usual photographic session. Out came the cameras! And gifts too - Alison handed out bookmarks she'd made for us all. Beautiful and practical! My love of reading is rather notorious now.

And Anthony then gave us all a M&S gift card!!! What a lovely thought, thanks again Anthony! I can't wait to go and spend it. Needless to say, we didn't have time to wander around M&S...

And Jenny gave me a Filofax for my daughter Phoebe! How lovely of her. (Jenny - she totally loves it!  Thanks very much!)

And here are the 'people and Filofax' photos...

Jenny (left) and Debbie.  And a pile of Filofaxes.  How did they get there?!

Alison from Filo-Obsessed
And a great big pile of Filofaxes!   Commence the stroking...NOW!

Oooooo! Ahhhhh!
Before we knew it, it was 1pm. So we decided to have a quick shop before lunch. Off we went to Rymans!  Anthony (what a trooper) and his harem of lovely ladies spent quite a while wandering around the shop, checking out all the various stationery items. There was a small Filofax stand that had some Filofaxes in the sale, but to be honest, the selection wasn't great and I knew that I could get most of them cheaper online anyway. I did buy a few bits and bobs though, not before a rather embarrassing moment at the till.  My debit card was declined, TWICE! "What?!  Are you serious?", I thought. I immediately rang my bank to find out my balance. No problem there, so what was going on? I paid cash in the end but had to refrain from having a panic attack at the thought that I only had enough cash to get my lunch and a few other bits. What if I saw a Filofax that I wanted to buy? What would I do??? I told Alison what had happened, still full of confusion, and she said, "Is your card out of date?" Of course! That's it! My card expired the day before and I'd totally forgotten about it. Fortunately, I had my new card in my purse ready for action. Thank goodness!!! Phew. Well done Alison, you can come again.

Anyway, I digress.  My purchases from Ryman's:

Midi expanding file for my spare personal inserts

A shopping list/to do pad, ripe for hacking!

I intend to chop the top off...

...and the bottom, then punch the pages and stick them in my Filofax.

And these little babies were just too cute to leave in the shop.  They are absolutely tiny!  I thought I might slot one into my Filofax.  Why?  Just because.

Look how small they are compared to my index finger!  CUTE!!!
Then we made our way to the stationery department at TK Maxx. There were a few Sketch Filofaxes (A5 and personal) and lots of little journals, note books and cards and various other stationery items. Nobody actually bought anything in here, but we did spend a good while rummaging and 'ooooo' ing and 'aaahhhh' ing.

By the time we came to leaving TK Maxx, we'd realised that it may actually be a good time to think about eating some food. Being that it was 2:30pm. Oooops! How did that happen?! So off we went, back to BHS (which was just next door) and got some lunch, which was bought for us all by a very generous (but naughty) person!  You know who you are!  (...and thanks again...yummy!)  ;-)

After lots more chatting about our lives and Filofaxes, we made our way swiftly (thanks to Jenny, the walking-talking map of Manchester) to Paperchase. Well oh my good Lord in heaven above. The magic word there was HEAVEN. Seriously. It was MASSIVE. And on three floors! After unpacking our sleeping bags and booking a space in the corner upstairs so we could continue browsing the next day (...!!!...), we set to work, starting on the first floor. Wow. Seriously, just - wow. The last time I was in a Paperchase, it was in the Trafford Centre in Manchester and it was tiny compared to this one. And I spent an hour in there, so would we ever leave this one?!?

We all spent rather a lot of time wandering around all the stands, picking up and flicking through various styles of notebooks, journals and diaries, as well as sticky notes, pens and general stationery bits and bobs.

Then, we discovered the Filofax stand. Good grief!!! It was seriously massive. The biggest and most varied selection of Filofaxes I have ever seen in the flesh. Seriously, it was HUGE. I really wanted to take a photograph but I kept noticing a security guard wandering around and thought I might get kicked out, which would have been a disaster. We all had a good look at what was on offer, and stroked and sniffed the Filofaxes that we'd never stroked and sniffed before. They had a really lovely blood-red lipstick-coloured Finsbury that I surprisingly liked. They also had Finchleys, Maldens, Holborns, Chameleons, Astons and even a black pocket Adelphi! Again none of us bought any Filofaxes because everything is so much cheaper online. Take note, shops!

Anyway, here's what I bought:

Ruled paper, to do sheets and Filofax appointment stickers.

A treat for my daughter - a tin containing everything you need to make fingerprint fairies!

Once we'd all spent up and managed to tear ourselves away, Jenny, Debi and Anthony left the group for Piccadilly train station at around 4:20pm. Alison and I wandered leisurely towards Manchester Victoria station, had a natter once we got there, said our goodbyes and then got on our respective trains.

On the train journey, I made some brief notes in my Filofax about what we did and when so I wouldn't forget. I was too busy enjoying the moment to do it during the meet-up! Then I dived into a romance novel on my Kindle and before I knew it, I was at my local train station waiting for my Dad to pick me up so I didn't have to get a bus/taxi. Thanks Dad! As a thank you to him, I'm going to plug his (very successful) photography website. Have a nosey, it's really good!

Then I picked up my car and drove down to my Mum and Dad's house to tell them about my day and show them my purchases. They also both have and use Filofaxes and my Mum also reads Philofaxy!

I arrived back home at 9pm, to realise that I had, once again, forgotten to eat. So for my 'tea', I had a bowl of cereal. Oh well, who needs food when there are Filofaxes to discuss and stationery to buy?!

I hope you enjoyed my write-up of the Philofaxy North-West Manchester meet-up. We decided we are definitely going to do it again, so why not come along and join us next time? Watch this space!

One life one Filofax, or more???

Hi guys!

Well, the title says it all. Are you in the 'one life one Filofax' camp, or do you use different Filofaxes for home/work/other?

I am firmly in the 'one life one Filofax' camp. I have various different commitments I need to keep track of so if I had different Filofaxes all on the go at the same time, things would get missed.  Here's what I keep track of in just my personal-sized diary (slimline binder) which is a week on one page with notes and a week's worth of DPP:

  1. Work hours (they change during school holidays).
  2. Freelance jobs.
  3. General social commitments.
  4. Band rehearsals.
  5. Band concerts.
  6. Cricket matches and admin deadlines (I'm Secretary for hubby's cricket club).
  7. Daughter's commitments.
  8. Hubby's commitments.
  9. School holidays.
  10. Dates I'm on call.
  11. General reminders & stuff to do.
  12. Birthdays.
  13. Important family deadlines.
  14. Important work deadlines & meetings that would affect general scheduling.

I also use my own DIY templates to keep track of various other things, but you can see details of my full setup here.

For work, I use an A4 binder and a month-on-one-page diary printed off the internet here, but most of what I do doesn't require me to remind myself of anything. I have odd deadlines and meetings but generally, my work just flows easily without much organisation required, although I do use Outlook to follow-up emails and for the calendar function.

As far as housework chores are concerned, I use a small whiteboard in the dining room to remind me of what needs to be done. This means that my hubby can see it and help me!!!  (Yeah right . . .)

For time-specific reminders, I'll use my Filofax but also put a reminder on my phone to alert me audibly at the necessary time. I put to dos on the 'notes' page of my WPP+N diary and then I plan my whole day out on a daily page from my DPP diary (I keep a about a week's worth in my slimline).

I've recently bought my first A5 (ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh...keep that to yourself...) and I'm currently in the process of making a list of things I can use it for.  There won't be a diary in it though...although I might use the one that came with it as a journal/record of sorts.

So, are you in the 'one life one Filofax' camp, or do you juggle multiple Filofaxes? How do you make sure that nothing gets missed? Do you sync them every day or once a week? Do you use a mobile phone or other form of technology as well?

And have you got any ideas about how I can use my new A5???
